Chin Chat
This coming Saturday (9 April) sees the latest in the highly successful series of BBC Symphony Orchestra 'Total Immersion' days at the Barbican Centre, London, devoted to the vivid and expressive music of Unsuk Chin (pictured left).
The Korean-born composer made her international breakthrough two decades ago with the premiere of Acrostic Wordplay, an exquisite sequence of fairy tales for soprano and ensemble. This work, along with such examples as her Grawemeyer Award-winning Violin Concerto and a showing of a film of her opera Alice in Wonderland, will serve to paint a rich portrait of this important 21st-century creative figure.
As part of the day's events, an introduction to Unsuk Chin and her music will be given by Professor Jonathan Cross, alongside a performance of Double Bind? for violin and electronics at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Later in the day, Jonathan will also be in public conversation with the composer in the Barbican Theatre.
That same evening, BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting an edited version of the events at the Barbican on Hear and Now. Jonathan Cross will be the live studio guest, reviewing the day's proceedings and commenting on the music. The broadcast begins at 22.30 and will be available for seven days via the BBC iPlayer.
