Christ Church in North America
The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, under the direction of Dr Stephen Darlington, spent two weeks of the Easter vacation on a major tour of the East Coast of the USA and Canada.
The Christ Church Choir gave concert performances in Charlotte, Davidson, Washington D.C., New York, Boston and Toronto, as well as recitals in the British embassies in Washington and Boston. There were two live broadcasts (in Charlotte on WDAV and in Boston on WGBH) and two recorded concerts. (Photo right: Christ Church Choir singing in the studios of WGBH, Boston.) One of these was networked across the US and heard by a vast listening audience on 17 different radio stations on Easter Saturday. The performance in Washington National Cathedral was broadcast on WETA before Easter.
The live audiences were enormous and responded to the concerts with standing ovations. In Charlotte, Boston and Toronto, the choir worked on performances with local choirs and gave open rehearsals attended by choir directors as well as singers.
