Saturday Night at the Opera
This Saturday (2 May) sees the premiere at the Rosemary Branch Theatre, London of Progeny by Phillip Cooke (JRF, Queen’s), one of a group of ‘six word operas’ to be given by the Warehouse Ensemble. On the same day, the choir of Gloucester Cathedral will perform Phillip’s Regina Coeli in Gloucester.
Also in May, Phillip will be taking part in the Lake District Summer Music Festival '4 x 4 Scheme' for talented young composers. For this occasion he has composed a new work for the Orlando Consort (Hymn to Saint Bega) and will spend a week working with them and the composer John Casken. A commission for next year’s festival will follow on from the scheme.
Further recent and forthcoming performances of Phillip Cooke’s music include: the Kreutzer Quartet playing his string quartet Diptych in Wolverhampton in April; a recent commission, Intrada, will be given its world premiere on tour in Germany by the Oxfordshire County Youth Orchestra this summer, and who will also give the UK premiere in Oxford in July.; and the London Contemporary Music Group recently recorded four of his works to be released early next year.
