Dame Mitsuko Ushida to Play at Oxford
World-renowned pianist Dame Mitsuko
Uchida will play a unique concert to support music at Oxford in January.
To be held at the Sheldonian Theatre on
11 January 2011, proceeds from the concert – as proposed by Dame Mitsuko herself –
will go to support the Faculty of Music, as part of the Oxford Thinking Campaign.
The programme will consist of Beethoven Piano Sonata Op. 90, Schumann
Davidbündlertänze, Chopin Prelude in C-sharp minor, and Chopin Third Sonata in B minor.
Mitsuko Uchida is one of the most significant pianists at work today, with a repertoire that extends from her famed interpretations of Mozart, to her exceptional performances of music by leading contemporary composers such as Pierre Boulez.
In 2009 she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and received the degree of Doctor of Music honoris causa from Oxford. In the same year she visited Oxford to give a masterclass to some of Oxford’s most promising postgraduate pianists, and she will be returning to do the same in 2012.
Tickets can be obtained from Music at Oxford.
‘Uchida is, simply, Uchida – an elegant, deeply musical interpreter who strikes an inspired balance of head and heart in everything she plays.’ (Chicago Tribune)
