Encounters in the Republic of Heaven

Trevor WishartDr Trevor Wishart, Leverhulme Fellow and Composer-in-Residence in the Faculty of Music 2010-11, presents Encounters in the Republic of Heaven at King's Place, London (near King's Cross Station) this coming Monday 16 May.

Wishart collected recordings in homes, schools and meeting-places in the North-East of England while working in the region between 2006 and 2009, and developed the software to make the piece possible. The project was completed on 1 January 2011.

In Encounters in the Republic of Heaven Wishart combines story-telling with the latest advances in audio art. He creates the sound of the wind from tens of thousands of human voices, gradually unfolding the stories of fishermen, poets, farmers and city-dwellers, accompanied by imaginary musical instruments derived directly from the speaking voices we hear.

King's Place describes the work as 'digital magic'.
