Martin Stokes Awarded Dent Medal 2010

Dent Medal 2010The Faculty of Music is delighted to announce that the Royal Musical Association's Dent Medal for 2010 has been awarded to Dr Martin Stokes (St John's College).

The Dent Medal is the RMA's most prestigious award. It was struck in memory of the distinguished scholar and musician Edward J. Dent (1876–1957), and has been awarded by the RMA annually since 1961 to recipients in mid-career, selected for their outstanding contribution to musicology.

Martin Stoke's research areas are primarily in ethnomusicology and the anthropology of music, with particular emphasis on social and cultural theory. He is also an organist and qanun player. Much of his work has involved the study of music of the Middle Eastern and Islamic world. He has recently published The Republic of Love (University of Chicago Press, 2010), and is currently working on an introduction to the music of the Middle East for Prentice Hall, as well as a survey of theoretical developments in ethnomusicology (co-authored with Martin Clayton) for Oxford University Press.

The RMA will be organising a Study Day in honour of Martin's work in 2011.
