New Look for New Academic Year

No-one setting foot in the foyer of the Music Faculty on St Aldate's can have failed to notice how smart the entrance area now looks. New carpets, new paint, new noticeboards, and a splendid display screen giving up-to-the-minute information about lectures, classes and other Faculty events.

But changes have also been taking place behind the Faculty's venerable oak doors. Both Lecture Rooms have been refurbished and have modern furniture, while the Seminar Room is now fitted out to live up to its name, with tables that no longer wobble, and all the latest IT equipment. This room is now also home to (half) the gamelan. But the biggest shock will be registered on entering the Committee Room. Gone is the dingy carpet, the empty old bookcases, the 70s hi-fi; in its place - as you can see in the photo - is new furniture, top-spec IT equipment that can also be used for showing films, and a range of portraits from the Faculty Collection hung to show them in their best light. Our teaching and study facilities are now - to use a phrase of which government officials are fond - 'fit for purpose'.

The new-look Faculty also welcomes three new members of staff: Dr Anna Stirr (Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Ethnomusicology and Fellow of St John's), Dr Daniel Grimley (University Lecturer, Fellow of Merton and Lecturer at Univ) and Mr Alec Sims (Academic Administrator).
