This week, Divine Art/Metier releases Robert Saxton’s string quartet of 1998, Songs, Dances and Ellipses played by the Kreutzer Quartet, and originally written for the 25th anniversary of the Chilingirian Quartet. The disc features three recent quartets by British composers.
Robert Saxton, Professor of Composition and Fellow of Worcester College, has also been involved in a number of other recent recording projects. In late December 2008, three of the eight scenes of his radio opera/musico-dramatic myth The Wandering Jew were recorded by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Andre de Ridder, with Roderick Williams (Magdalen graduate) in the title role. The remainder will be recorded in October. Worcester College Chapel Choir, directed by Thomas Allery (Senior Organ Scholar), released late in 2008 a CD including Saxton’s carol Was it Winter (on his own text).
On 22 January, Ring, Time (commissioned for Sir Michael Tippett's 90th birthday celebrations) will be performed at the Blackheath Concert Halls by the Trinity College of Music Symphonic Wind Orchestra conducted by Tom Hammond. Also later this month, Prayer before Sleep will be performed at the British Ambassador’s residence in the Hague, and in April at the Amsterdam Conservatoire by a Dutch ensemble with the pianist Cecily Lock (St Hilda’s music graduate, 2004). In March the cellist Tony Woollard will play the Sonata for solo cello on a theme of Walton at the 2009 Auckland Festival, New Zealand.
