RAE 2008 Results

The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise were published today (Thursday 18 December). The Oxford Music Faculty has been shown to be part of an elite group of UK Music departments in which 50% or more of research is assessed to be of 4* quality (i.e., world leading). The Oxford Faculty also submitted the largest number of researchers (22.25 full-time equivalent) of any UK department.

Eric Clarke, Heather Professor of Music, commented, ‘This is an outstanding result for Oxford by any standards, and the fact that the Faculty was so inclusive in its submission demonstrates both the breadth of expertise as well as the exceptional quality of my many brilliant colleagues.’

The Research Assessment Exercise produces quality ratings for the research activity of every subject area submitted by a higher education institution to its assessment panels. The Funding Council (HEFCE) will use these quality profiles to determine the level of research grants each institution receives from 2009–10.

The rating methods for this RAE have changed since the last exercise in 2001. The Oxford Music Faculty was awarded the highest ranking (then 5*) in both of  the previous Exercises (1996 and 2001); ratings now range from 'unclassified'  to  4* (not 1 to 5*), and rather than receiving a single summary rating, each department receives a profile showing the distribution of research across all five categories.
