Trevor Wishart Composer-in-Residence 2010-11
The pioneering electroacoustic composer Trevor Wishart has been appointed Composer-in-Residence in the Faculty of Music for the academic year 2010-11, supported by the award of a Leverhulme Fellowship. The residency is held in association with St Hilda's College and the Department of Applied Mathematics. The principal aim of the residency is to explore the links between music, science and mathematics.
Trevor Wishart's compositional interests focus mainly on the human voice. This is most evident in his VOX Cycle, Tongues of Fire, Globalalia, Two Women and American Triptych. He is also a vocal improvisor. He has written two influential books On Sonic Art and Audible Design, the latter dealing with the practice of composing with digital audio.
The first public event to launch the residency will be a lecture-concert held at the Faculty of Music (Denis Arnold Hall) on Thursday 21 October, to include Vox 5 (1986), Two Women (1998) and the recently completed Encounters in the Republic of Heaven: Act 1. (See events for more details.)
During the course of his residency, Trevor will be giving a series of seminars on electrocoustic music, he will be working with student composers, and he will be composing a new work for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He will also be presenting his own work in a variety of venues across Oxford.
