Thomas Hodgson, St John's College

My research focuses on discourses and practices of music among Pakistani Mirpuris living in Bradford.  Based on ethnographic research conducted in Bradford and Pakistan, I look at the discursive ways in which Mirpuris articulate multiple senses of belonging and identity through and by music.  More broadly, my doctoral thesis explores how the everyday activities of marginalized migrant groups in places like Bradford can, potentially, contribute to a more nuanced and informed understanding of diaspora, transnationalism and multiculturalism.

Besides my doctoral research I am also Assistant Editor of a major new peer-reviewed journal - Performing Islam - with specific editorial responsibility for reviews, interviews and festivals. I have also had articles published in the New Statesman and The Times.
