Professor Brian Trowell, 1931 – 2015

The loss of the Faculty’s former Heather Professor of Music, Brian Trowell, who died in Oxford yesterday, will be felt keenly by all who knew him.  Brian represented a broad range of musical interests, from the 15th century – his research was supervised by Thurston Dart at Cambridge – to Elgar – where he served on the editorial committee of the edition of Elgar’s works — to music just written. In particular, he was interested in opera of all periods, and gave generously in time, energy, and dynamism to its study, and also to its staging; he was active as a producer, editor and translator. Brian was a great friend to the Faculty of Music, and was a willing and enthusiastic guide and mentor to both the staff and to the students.
