Ethnomusicology Professor Will Give Keynote Address at International Conference

Professor Jason Stanyek will be giving a keynote address for the Sixth International Rhythm Changes Conference, taking place in Graz, Austria on 11-14 April 2019. One of the largest gatherings of jazz scholars, this year’s Rhythm Changes theme is ‘Jazz Journeys’ and ‘seeks to critically explore how ideas of mobility, movement, travel, exchange, voyaging, border-crossing and odyssey have shaped – and continue to shape – debates about the music’s past and future’. Professor Stanyek’s address is titled “The Interhemispheric Life of a Song: ‘Wave’, Bossa Nova, and the Mobilities of Jazz” and brings together two strands of research, found in his volumes (volume 1 and volume 2) (with Sumanth Gopinath) on mobile music and in his forthcoming volume (with Frederick Moehn) for Oxford University Press on the history of bossa nova in the U.S.
