Dr Heather Roche (independent) and Dr Scott McLaughlin (University of Leeds): Clarinet multiphonics in ‘The Garden of Forking Paths’

“The Garden of Forking Paths” is an AHRC Leadership Fellowship project by Scott McLaughlin (PI) and Heather Roche (clarinet specialist/consultant). The project develops compositional strategies for using the contingencies of the clarinet, balancing the mutual feedback of human and material agencies (Pickering 1995) across the musician-instrument assemblage. Key to this is the question of agency: in what ways does the score/notation constrain or guide the player? How does player-intention function in contexts where the sound can be unpredictable? If the instrument is granted agency, what form does that take, how can be used compositionally, and how does this affect the assemblage?

This talk will take place on Zoom, at the usual time of 5.15pm, on Tuesday 26 May. Please RSVP to george.haggett@magd.ox.ac.uk and annabelle.page@magd.ox.ac.uk before midday on 26 May so we can send you the link.
