Oxford University Wind Orchestra Concert ‘Symphonies for Band’
June 15 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pmFree
For their final concert of the year, the Oxford University Wind Orchestra present an evening of diverse and exciting works written for symphonic winds in the last century.
In the first half, a big band made up of some of the university’s finest woodwind and brass players will be joined by soloist Tom Carr for a performance of two incredible pieces originally written for the ‘King of Swing’, Benny Goodman, with the full orchestra re-joining for a rendition of one of Gershwin’s most memorable scores. The second half will see two virtuosic and contrasting works by McCabe and Hess demonstrate the breadth of the wind ensemble medium, finishing with a cornerstone symphony in the repertoire by prolific 20th century American composer, Vincent Persichetti.
Stravinsky – Ebony Concerto
Bernstein – Prelude, Fugue and Riffs
Gershwin arr. Brubaker – An American in Paris
McCabe – Canyons
Hess – The Lochnagar Suite*
Persichetti – Symphony No. 6 (‘For Band’)
