Performance Clinic: Daniel Pailthorpe with Liz Kenny
October 16, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Performance clinics are the place to hone performance skills with a visiting professional who will also share their experiences of building a musical career.
In the first of these, orchestral principal and chamber player Daniel Pailthorpe, will join with one of Europe’s leading lute players and new Director of performance, Liz Kenny. Together, they will develop students as rounded musicians ready for life after university.
Flautists will work with Daniel on issues of technique and musicianship. We will also explore Daniel’s career as a flautist, including becoming co-principal of the BBC symphony orchestra, and founding chamber group the London Conchord Ensemble. How did he go about this after his undergraduate degree at Cambridge combining academic and performance study? Finally, drawing on the Bate’s unique collection, she will ask Daniel what he looks for in an instrument.
Claire Holden, principal investigator in the Faculty’s Transforming HIP project. Claire will transform our ideas about how to play “standard” repertoire.
Bach for string players. With international violinist Caroline Balding on one of her regular visits to the Faculty to teach. Playing unaccompanied Bach on modern instruments, tips and strategies. How baroque should we go?
Accompanist or piano collaborator? RCM’s Simon Lepper works with duos, partners in music rather than soloists and servants!
