Research Colloquium: Peter Franklin (Oxford) & Bojan Bujic (Oxford)
May 4 @ 5:15 pm - 7:00 pmFree
Arnold Schoenberg and Egon Wellesz: A Fraught Relationship. Peter Franklin in conversation with Bojan Bujic.
Peter Franklin introduces this recently published book about Schoenberg and one of his earliest pupils, the composer and musicologist Egon Wellesz (Vienna 1885 – Oxford 1974). Wellesz found himself torn between an intense admiration for Schoenberg and an equally strong desire to avoid being dominated by Schoenberg’s strong personality. Schoenberg considered him an untrustworthy ally yet, throughout his long life, Wellesz continued to champion Schoenberg’s cause. Although Bojan Bujic knew Wellesz in Oxford, this monograph is not a personal memoir but rather a documentary study of the relationship between the two protagonists and an exploration of differing strands within Viennese musical modernism. Having arrived in Oxford in 1938 as a refugee from Austria, Wellesz left a deep mark in the life of the University and Lincoln College and was arguably the central moving spirit behind the foundation of the Oxford Faculty of Music.
