Making Music Manuscripts in Post-Reformation Sweden: Books of Liturgy as Evidence of the Musical, Material and Social Networks of the Swedish Clergy
The surviving liturgical music books from sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Sweden attest the gradual implementation of religious Reformation in the vast new kingdom. Although the new Lutheran music required some new books that were either acquired from the printing houses in Germany or the royal printing house in Stockholm, the clergy also continued to create and circulate their self-made music manuscripts, often with repertory and melodies familiar from pre-Reformation era. Each surviving liturgical music manuscript is a unique composite in terms of format and content, reflecting the materials available and skills possessed by each clergyman-scribe, who occasionally left their signature to pages to signify ownership of the book. As the general levels of literacy were low among the population, the skill of reading and writing notated music was possessed mainly by the clergy; this limited readership of the manuscripts allows the study of the professional networks of the clergy through the material properties of the surviving music books.
A music book often passed in the hands of several owners over many decades, occasionally creating an intriguing chain of ownership and authorship, and the provenance of one book could range across the Gulf of Bothnia. The additions and alterations made into the books also attest to the varied and flexible approaches in making and circulating music books in post-Reformation Sweden during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The surviving books offer an invaluable insight into the development of music, liturgy and linguistics in the area; in addition, their physical properties provide further insight on the material culture of books in Sweden.
