Abstract: Sound as an art medium emerged during the 1960s after a fifty-year gestation. In the spirit of counterculture and revolution, artists were experimenting with time-based art that was intangible and difficult to commodify and collect. Today, when the experience of sound is increasingly private, Barbara London discusses the impact of new technologies on sound art exhibitions.
Barbara London is a New York-based curator, consultant and writer who founded the video exhibition and collection programs at The Museum of Modern Art, where she worked between 1973 and 2013. Barbara teaches at Yale in the School of Art, and is a consultant with the Kadist Foundation. In 2019, Phaidon will publish her book that traces video art’s transition to media.
