Graduate Composition Student wins National Award

The winner of the 2017 National Centre for Early Music Young Composer’s Award in the 19-25 years category is current masters student Frederick Viner (pictured left, with Dominic Wills, winner of the 18 and under category) for his piece Prayer from Afar.

The award is presented by the NCEM in association with BBC Radio 3 and the vocal ensemble The Tallis Scholars, directed by Peter Phillips.

Also among the finalists was Faculty alumnus Marco Galvani.

The award was judged at the NCEM in York on Thursday 11 May, when the shortlist of entries was presented by the York-based Ebor Singers, directed by Paul Gameson, in a workshop for the young composers led by composer Christopher Fox.

The winning works will be premiered by The Tallis Scholars in a concert at The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester on Saturday 16 September. This concert will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Early Music Show.
