Area of proposed thesis

Reassessing Richard Strauss’s late aesthetic

This dissertation aims to analyse the musical and ideological structures that underlie Strauss’s late works. In particular, I situate the late works in the context of recent theories of modernism and consider Strauss’s musical aesthetic directly in relation to, and as a contribution to, the social and intellectual currents of Western modernity.
