Area of proposed thesis

An English Mask: Problems of Vaughan Williams’s Musical Identity

My Master’s dissertation will focus on Vaughan Williams’s Job: A Masque for Dancing, first staged as a ballet in 1931. I aim to interrogate Job’s status as a national ballet, expanding the idea of Englishness that is so often attributed to Vaughan Williams’s work whilst showing that English style in the 1920s and 30s was more complex, diverse, and far less insular than some previous scholarship has acknowledged.
