Last week we held the first Performance Clinic: a new series where students hone their performance skills with a visiting professional who will also share with students their own experiences of building a musical career.
Daniel Pailthorpe (BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Conchord Ensemble) came to the Faculty and worked with flute and oboe players on chamber and solo repertoire. It was a wide ranging and mind-blowing experience which took in the mysteries of the wooden flute; when and how to change embouchure, how to create surprise and drama in performance. The students responded brilliantly and went to places beyond their current sound and comfort zone, being guided seamlessly through technical challenge to musical ambition. Andy Lamb provided instruments from the Bate Collection to help put the Boehm system into context and showcase some of the more weird and wonderful instruments along the way.
