Music Faculty Alumnae to Compose New Opera for Glyndebourne

In February 2022, Glyndebourne will present the world premiere of Pay the Piper, a new youth opera jointly composed by the four participants of Balancing the Score, a development programme exclusively for female composers. Among the composers involved are two Faculty alumnae composers, Anna Appleby (St Hilda’s College, 2011) & Ninfea Cruttwell-Reade (Magdalen College, 2007).

Anna writes: “This project has been a few years in the making but is finally going ahead in February 2022. It is an innovative collaboration between four composers who have all been resident with Glyndebourne since 2019 on the ‘Balancing the Score’ scheme. We have worked with librettist Hazel Gould, director Sinead O’Neill and conductor Johann Stuckenbruck to make an exciting new narrative structure which will tell the story of the Pied Piper in a postmodern way. The music will be performed by Glyndebourne Youth Opera and Psappha Ensemble with guest professional opera singers and promises to be an accessible contemporary classical work with all of the professional design and backstage brilliance that a Glyndebourne production offers.”
