OUMS Outreach hosted six introductory Makaton signing sessions in February with a tutor from Hands Aloud. These sessions, with a focus on music, were designed to train musicians and educators and consisted of two participatory 90-minute workshops on zoom with a professional Makaton tutor.
OUMS Access and Outreach Officer Ellen O’Brien (Music, 2018) said: “Makaton is often used by people with learning or communication difficulties, in school settings and within the public, so is a great tool for musicians to have, especially when working on outreach projects. OUMS Outreach believe that music should be inclusive for all so we are learning more communication methods to ensure that we can communicate best with all the schools that they work with.”
