Oxford at the Aldeburgh Festival

Today, Tuesday 13 June, at the Aldeburgh Festival, the Aldeburgh Festival Orchestra performs Professor Robert Saxton’s The Resurrection of the Soldiers (2016), based on a painting of the same name by Stanley Spencer. In the same programme, two works by Faculty alumna Dr Deborah Pritchard are also responses to art works, those of Maggi Hambling. Edge receives its premiere, in response to Hambling’s ‘Edge’ series on show at Aldeburgh, works reflecting on global warming and the consequences of the melting of the polar ice caps. Wall of Water (2014) is a response to another series by Hambling, a representation of waves crashing on the seawall at Southwold near Aldeburgh.

Other alumni to be heard at Aldeburgh this year are Mark Simpson, whose Windflower is played by oboist Nicholas Daniel and narrator, and Ryan Wigglesworth, who conducts a new production of Britten’s opera A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
