Western art music after 1945 and its intersection with contemporary aesthetical-philosophical thoughts, musical meaning and subjectivity, musical multimedia (e.g. operatic work, music theatre, Tanztheater) of the late 20th and 21st centuries, and global modernism (specifically musical modernism in China).

My project, co-supervised by Prof. Eric Clarke and Prof. Jonathan Cross, focuses on the distinctive concepts of sound and ways of listening emerging from the musical works and the compositional philosophies of Salvatore Sciarrino and Helmut Lachenmann. Its core research question revolves around an ecological perception of musical meaning and the condition of subjectivity as manifested mainly in the operatic works of the two composers. Both aspects are approached through a analytical-hermeneutic method that is reception- or perception-oriented.
