My research, supervised by Professor Michael Burden, reconstructs and contextualizes François Delsarte’s “Course in Applied Aesthetics” (1839-1859), a pedagogical system of training performers, artists, and public speakers that combined the use of gesture, articulate speech, and vocal inflection – thus claiming to unify the arts of dance, poetry, and music. My project also explores Delsarte’s influence on musical culture in Britain, and on the aesthetic writings of Richard Wagner.
