‘Shrove Duos’ premiered by the London Sinfonietta

Luke Lewis

Lecturer in Music at New College, Luke Lewis, was featured as part of the London Sinfonietta‘s World Premiere Wednesday series on YouTube. His ‘Shrove Duos’, written for any two treble instruments, begin by taking as source material an archival recording of a welsh folk song (‘The Pancake Song’) and were premiered by principal violinist Jonathan Morton and former principal violinist Clio Gould. The event streamed live on YouTube and included a viewer Q&A between Luke, Jonathan and cellist/composer Zöe Martlew.

The premiere marks the beginning of Luke’s time as one of the London Sinfonietta ‘Writing the Future’ composers, the culmination of which will be an ensemble work exploring archival recordings made by folksong collector Alan Lomax in Wales in the 1950s and computer-based methods of transcription and analysis.

The event is available to watch on on YouTube.
