Ancient Greek Dance Workshop

£80 per student (£26.66 per day of workshop/rehearsal) subsidised by Ancient Music at Oxford from £130.

In February 2026, Ancient Music at Oxford, will host a week-long programme combining research presentations and practical workshops, culminating in a public concert. The project invites both scholars and the wider public to experience mousikē technē, the ancient Greek art of music, as a holistic practice uniting poetry, movement, and sound.

For this event, Ancient Music at Oxford will welcome a group of international specialists whose work bridges research and performance to revive aspects of the sound world of antiquity. Drawing on all surviving sources, they reconstruct ancient instruments and perform both extant musical fragments and new compositions inspired by ancient traditions.

As part of this programme, we are delighted to welcome Dr Elisa Anzellotti, dance scholar and author of La Danza nell’Antichità: Etruschi, Greci e Romani (2018), for a lecture and practical workshop on ancient Greco-Roman dance.

Tuesday morning, 24 February
Dr Anzellotti will give a lecture introducing the theoretical foundations of ancient dance and their relationship to music, rhythm, and choreography.

Tuesday & Wednesday afternoon, 24–25 February
Participants will take part in a hands-on workshop exploring reconstructed Greco-Roman dance forms, working directly with Dr Anzellotti on choreography.

Friday Evening, 27th February
Interested participants will perform as part of the AMO public concert on Friday, 27 February, alongside music played on reconstructed ancient instruments by an international ensemble of scholar-performers.

During the workshop, participants will work with Dr Anzellotti on choreography for a short performance set to a musical setting of one of Anacreon’s poems composed by aulos player and composer Callum Armstrong. This choreography will be alongside music played on reconstructed ancient instruments by an international ensemble of scholar-performers.
