Visiting

The Faculty of Music welcomes expressions of interest from prospective visiting scholars. However, before approaching the Faculty, please read the guidance below.

Additionally, the University has a general information page on the various types of visitor statuses it accepts here.

What type of visitor are you?

Undergraduate student

Visiting Students
A student from overseas wishing to spend up to one year in Oxford on an undergraduate course can apply to a college for a place as a registered Visiting Student. Visiting Students become members of an Oxford college, and it is the college that will arrange for the student’s tuition. The Faculty of Music does not directly accept Visiting Students.

For further information on applying to be a Visiting Student, please see: ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/international-students/events/visiting-students

Doctoral (postgraduate research) student

Recognised Student
A graduate student currently engaged in research at another university may be able to apply for Recognised Student status to spend up to three terms (one year) in Oxford. The status of Recognised Student is intended primarily for graduates of some years’ standing engaged in research elsewhere who wish to work in Oxford on a specific topic under the guidance of an academic familiar with the chosen area of study. Recognised students may use University libraries and attend lectures, seminars and classes (subject to permission), although Recognised Students status does not provide a formal association with an Oxford college and will not be awarded a formal qualification or accreditation by Oxford.

Further details about applying to be a Recognised Student may be found here: ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/courses/introducing-our-courses?wssl=1#content-tab–5

Postdoctoral researcher or established academic

Visiting Scholar (academic visitor)
Research-active academic staff at other institutions who would like to visit Oxford for a month or longer may be eligible to apply to become a Visiting Scholar at the Faculty of Music for up to one year.

Prospective Visiting Scholars should in the first instance consider the research interests of the Faculty’s academic staff to see if a suitable mentor can be identified. The potential mentor should then be contacted with a brief outline of the research proposal to enquire if they might be willing to act as mentor. A list of the Faculty’s academic staff may be found here: music.ox.ac.uk/about/people/academic-staff/university-lecturers-and-college-fellows

If the proposed mentor supports the proposal, a formal written submission (advised upon by the Faculty host) should then be made to the Faculty, accompanied by a copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae. The proposal should be only 1-2 pages in length, and should address the points below.

  • Scholarly content/ aims of the proposed visit
  • Proposed dates for the visit
  • Name of Faculty host/ mentor/ sponsor
  • Facilities required – what you expect the Faculty to provide during your visit. (e.g. desk space, any special requirements)
  • Source of funding – please indicate how you will support yourself financially during the period of the visit, to include the fee payable below.
  • Acceptance of the Confirmation of Association Fee payable (this will be confirmed if the proposal is approved; indicative rates are £2,000 p.a. without desk space or £5,000 with desk space, although please note that space is extremely limited, and it is not guaranteed that desk space could be provided)
  • Proposed contribution(s) to the Faculty (e.g. colloquium, graduate seminar, other teaching, provision of training, knowledge exchange)
  • Any other relevant information

Proposals should be submitted to the Faculty via the proposed Faculty host.

Applications for Visiting Scholar status should be made a minimum of 6 months in advance of the proposed visit.
