The Oxford University Music Faculty is one of the largest and liveliest music departments in the UK. As an internationally renowned centre of teaching and research in all aspects of music, it is an exciting and stimulating environment in which to work and study.
Our undergraduate and graduate curricula provide students with a broad range of skills and knowledge, reflecting the spectrum of current music research. Faculty expertise ranges from the 13th to the 21st centuries and across the globe. Classical and popular music topics, ethnomusicology, music education and community music, composition and performance are taught by leading experts, allowing students to expand, develop, and refine their interests over the course of their degree programmes.
From autumn 2025, the Music Faculty is located in the Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities. This new, multi-disciplinary building includes, as well as lecture halls and seminar rooms, a 500-seat Concert Hall, electronic music studios and black box, cinema, theatre, and practice rooms. The Bate Collection of Musical Instruments is housed in purpose-built spaces in the Schwarzman Centre. The Music Faculty Library is also on site, providing students with teaching materials and study spaces. The unrivalled resources of the Bodleian Library provides further opportunities for research.
The Faculty of Music organises a wide variety of concerts, masterclasses, workshops, public lectures and conferences. Our research environment is greatly enriched by a roster of visitors from the worlds of musicology, performance and composition, and from the wider professional musical world. All this is complemented by the exceptionally rich musical and academic life of the wider University and its colleges. Students can participate in a wide range of ensembles, from choirs, orchestras and chamber groups, to opera and music theatre productions, jazz and contemporary music ensembles.
