Songs from Antiquity

Entry by optional donation

From surviving ancient fragments to newly composed works this concert brings Ancient Mousikē Technē, the Art of the Muses, to life on stage.

This recital features a diverse programme of reconstructed Ancient Greek music that combines cutting edge research with traditional methods of Ancient Greek music-making.

Many of these works are accompanied by authentically reconstructed Ancient Greek dance by Elisa Anzellotti.

Ancient Music at Oxford is joined by a chorus of skilled musicians from around Oxford and a global cast of experts in the reconstruction of ancient Greek performance arts. These experts perform on a variety of reconstructed ancient instruments built based on surviving evidence from antiquity. We are proud to work alongside Callum Armstrong (aulos), Abigail Bradford (aulos), Rosa Fragorapti (lyre), and Felipe Aguirre Quintero (kithara, phorminx, barbiton) to bring this music to life.

This recital is also the debut performance of a Roman kithara made by expert luthier Ben Hebbert.
