As part of the College's World Music Series this year, renowned musicians Abdelkader Saadoun and Kader Fahem will perform a one-hour concert with a programme that celebrates Algerian Raï music which emerged as a major world music genre in the late 1980s with roots in traditional Bedouin music.
Algerian-born Abdelkader Saadoun is a renowned master of Raï music and is a composer, singer, and song writer. He plays oud, mandola, percussion and drums. Kader Fahem was born in Algiers from Berber Kabylian parents and grew up amongst the sound of bendirs, darbukas, mandole and yuyus, Many years later the lure of his roots became too strong to resist and he is now a seasoned performer.
