This photography exhibition explores the creative, social, and political forms that jazz takes in the West African country of Ghana through the ethnographic work of Dr Samuel Boateng. Inspired by the jazz terminology and practice known as a turnaround—a chord progression typically found at the end of songs and designed to lead musicians to the beginning of the music or to a new section—the project invites audiences to reconsider our assumptions about music making and jazz practice in Ghana. Photosonic Turnaround is an opportunity to take another visual and sonic look at African jazz, not as something already complete or in the past, rather as a generative modern practice rich in sound and visual codes suited for imagining new creative futures.
