Chinese Opera Music Workshop

Register here!

Free entry, registration required via the link above.

In this workshop, you will learn how to play Chinese Opera (specifically Huangmeixi 黄梅戏) music, including introductions to numerical notation (jianpu 简谱), Chinese concepts of ornamentation, rhythmic structures, and playing techniques, and more! The workshop is specifically designed with Western instruments in mind.

Feel free to bring any instrument you feel comfortable playing -- scores in Western musical notation and Chinese numerical notation will be provided. Plucked, bowed, and woodwind instruments are traditional in Chinese Opera music, but any and all instruments are encouraged. Percussionists are also needed, with some unique Chinese cymbals being provided. The workshop will be led in English.

This workshop will be held in Seminar Room 10.204, Faculty of Music, Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, between 14:00 and 16:00 on Friday 21st November. This workshop will be the first of a number of research workshops in which we develop a musical and dramatic language for the Red Threaded Theatre show Prince Consort Ladygirl 女驸马.
