Schubert - Piano Trio No.2 in E♭ major, Op.100, D.929
Trio Gaspard is widely praised for its unique and fresh approach to the score. They have won prizes in international competitions, and have made a number of widely praised recordings. As well as exploring and championing the traditional piano trio repertoire, Trio Gaspard works regularly with contemporary composers. They have commissioned companion pieces to the Haydn trios one of which, by Finnish composer Olli Mustonen, opens our programme. Following Haydn’s own delightful trio, which weaves gypsy dance tunes into the classical sonata form, Trio Gaspard will perform a new piece, Roh-Rau, commissioned from the Moldovan composer and violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. This will be complemented by a trio from the Soviet-Armenian composer Arno Badadjanian, described as ‘romantic and passionate’
The concert will conclude with Schubert’s second piano trio, Robert Schumann famously described this work as 'spirited, masculine, and dramatic,' noting that it passed through the musical world 'like an angry thunderstorm'. This promises to be an exhilarating conclusion to our season of the finest chamber music.
