OUSinf plays Mendelssohn, Gipps, Poulenc & Cook

£15.50 Adult/£8.00 student

Oxford University Sinfonietta (OUSinf) is the premier chamber orchestra of Oxford University housing the very best instrumentalists that the university has to offer. OUSinf selects its conductor from the student body in a very competitive process in which Euan Kemp has been chosen to direct the orchestra for 2026-27.

The Oxford University Sinfonietta presents its Trinity Term 2026 Concert, uniting the old of Mendelssohn with the new of Gipps, Poulenc and Cook. We begin with Mendelssohn’s evocative Hebrides Overture, an early tone poem depicting the overwhelming beauty he found on his visit to the Isle of Staffa. This is followed by Ruth Gipps’ Ambarvalia, a short but spirited piece that encapsulates pastoral England, written as a tribute to composer Adrian Cruft—a natural progression from the isles of Scotland. We then proudly feature a new composition by music student Rudyard Cook (Queen’s College), before concluding with Poulenc’s light-hearted Sinfonietta, famed for its dance rhythms and almost satirical nature. Join us at 8:00 PM on Friday, 5th June at Christ Church Cathedral for a captivating evening of works for chamber orchestra.
