My research integrates composition with acoustic and electronic instruments to investigate notions of agency in live electronic music and sound art. Complimenting my composition portfolio of works, my thesis will develop a critical framework that aims to explain and develop different forms of non-human agency and how these interact with human agency in composition, performance, and listening. This will draw upon ideas from several extra-musical fields including ecological perception theory, theory of mind, material agency, and scholarship on artificial intelligence and virtual reality.
