Opportunities

The Faculty of Music invites researchers in relevant fields to consider joining our vibrant community. We may be able to host your already-awarded grant or support you when applying in competitions for national and international fellowships. If this is something that you would like to explore, we advise that you first contact members of our academic staff whose research interests are most closely aligned with your own (https://www.music.ox.ac.uk/academic-staff) after which you may wish to get in touch with our Director of Research via our Deputy Administrator (research@music.ox.ac.uk).

Postdoctoral opportunities for Early Career Researchers

If you are an early-career postdoctoral researcher, please see the following funder websites for details of relevant calls. Be sure to read the guidelines carefully for the application and eligibility criteria before undertaking any further steps.  Annual deadlines are published on the websites.

For UK-based applicants:

We invite applicants annually for the British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships and Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships (which also support Composition), and advertise these opportunities on our website under news items. These applications involve an internal competition; should your application be selected by the Faculty, it will be supported by our Research Facilitator and Research Services to help with budgeting details and optimise your proposal during the application phase. Please check our website news items for these annual calls.

For applicants based outside the UK:

If you are currently based outside the UK and wish to move to Oxford for your project, the most relevant funding calls are:

Newton International Fellowships

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships

For all applicants:

In addition to the above schemes, many of the Oxford colleges offer fellowship opportunities. Please consult the individual college websites or the Oxford Gazette to identify suitable college-based competitions.

If you successfully obtain a college-based appointment, please inform the Music Faculty as soon as possible so that we may assist you getting in touch with the many opportunities presented by the Faculty’s and the University’s complex and multi-faceted research environment.

Other early career research opportunities

Occasionally, postdoctoral appointments also become available as part of a scholar leading a large-scale team-based research project such as an ERC Starting, Consolidator or Advanced Grant in the Music Faculty. Such opportunities typically involve an international search process and will be advertised through our website as a news item in addition to national and international channels advertising such job opportunities worldwide.

Opportunities for Mid-Career and Senior Researchers

If you are a mid-career or senior academic and are considering coming to Oxford for an academic stay, for example in the context of an upcoming sabbatical or if you have recently been awarded a research grant, the Faculty will be pleased to hear from you. Some initial guidance may be found on https://www.music.ox.ac.uk/visiting-scholars.  You may also wish to directly contact members of our academic staff whose research interests are most closely aligned with your own (https://www.music.ox.ac.uk/academic-staff) to discuss the possibilities available at your career stage, after which you may wish to contact our Director of Research via our Deputy Administrator (research@music.ox.ac.uk) or the Chair of the Faculty Board.
