Interdisciplinary Study Day: Tradition and Transformation in Hofmannsthal's Vienna
Friday 25 April 2025, 9am
Sophia Sheppard Room, Magdalen College, High Street, OX1 4AU
Tickets £25 on arrival (£10 students). Registration is required and will close on Thursday 10th April.
Springing from the multifarious disciplines that characterise the life and works of Hugo von Hofmannsthal, this Study Day brings together the intellectual and natural landscapes of the city of Vienna. Papers also explore the theatrical stage and its modern rival, the gramophone, and Hofmannsthal's engagement with the socio-political world of the time.
Robert Vilain (St Hugh's, Oxford) will give the keynote speech on the novelistic re-tellings of Der Rosenkavalier and Katja Kaluga (Freies Deutsches Hochstift, Frankfurter Goethe-Museum) presents a talk on the wealth of material in the Hofmannsthal archive. Kristina Hammer (President, Salzburg Festival) will give an introduction to the day.
We welcome speakers from more than six countries.
Please note that this event is in-person only. Registration is essential.
